Software does not age in the sense that it wrinkles or crumbles into dust. However, there are influences that make them age virtually:
- The hardware it runs on might need replacing,
- the operating system,
- used frameworks,
- or third-party libraries
might need security fixes or updates to run in the changed environment.
... and you end up with software that does not work anymore.
It would be ideal to keep everything up to date at all times.
Otherwise, tiny dust spots become total losses.
If simple updates are no longer possible, the entire software may have to be reengineered.
